Please evaluate my chances

by pabloruno Tue Nov 06, 2012 12:25 pm

Hi,

I have credentials:
GPA: 2.9/4 (3.62/5), Computer Engineering frm top 25 university and top 2 uni from singapore.
GMAT: 740 (verbal:40, quant:50, both 90 percentile, overall 97)
Workex: 1 yr 4 mths as IT analyst at a major Investment Bank
Others: CFA level 3 candidate, cleared 1&2.

My GPA is the major worry. My course was difficult and i did not hv much interest in my coursework, as i was more interested in business. i want to get into wealth management and probably open my own firm after a good experience at a top bank.

What are my chances of getting to:
1. Ivy League MBA/sloan?
2. chicago booth/Kellogg/Insead/other top 20?
3. For a foreign applicant , also , is it worth applying to NYU Stern or Haas, especially weighing cost to future salary? If yes, what chance do i have of getting in?

it has been really frustrating for me thinking about my chancesand I would really appreciate some advice.

Please also consider that I will be applying to Round 2. Does that make it a difference in my application?

And I would really appreciate a quick reply.

Hi Pablo,

Sorry for the delayed response. Your GPA is definitely a concern, though your stellar GMAT score should help to balance it out. I would address the GPA in an optional statement and just admit what you've stated below - take responsibility, point to your capabilities (via GMAT, recommendations), and that's all you can really do. The other option would be to enroll in some supplementary courses to show that you can handle academic settings well.

Professionally, you come from the banking industry which is great, but your role has been very technical. It's going to be slightly more difficult for you to demonstrate your leadership capacity given your role. You've also only worked for a little over a year, which is on the lower side of experience for MBA applicants. Have you considered waiting a year or two before applying so that you can gain more experience and showcase a stronger profile?

Extracurricular/Community: I don't see much in these areas. This is a weakness in your profile.

I think a top Ivy like MIT is going to be a bit unrealistic with your profile. A top 20 like Chicago is also going to be a stretch, in my opinion. I'd include Berkeley in this category.

I'm not sure I completely understand your last question specifically about Berkeley and NYU, but NYU might be a good target program given your profile.

I hope this helps,
Mili
