Please evaluate my profile

by pushkarsikka Tue May 31, 2011 11:24 am

Hi,
Can someone please evaluate my profile and give me suggestions regarding preparation for GMAT. I have completed second year of engineering and would be passing out in may 2013 and want to start preparation so that I can apply by July 2012 which is typically the application end date for most B-schools.

1. I have two years of part time work experience as a business development executive at a web content development firm. I attend full time college during the day and work at the company for 3-5 hours in the evenings and for 8-10 hours on weekends and holidays. By the time i will apply, I will have three
2. I have four internships
3. I have also done industrial trainings in two companies (Nokia and Ernst and young)
4. College ECA is very good. Been an executive member of many clubs like the debating society and tech clubs. Have been marketing coordinator at college festivals. Have also handled the position of media coordinator and head strategy and planning at college festivals
5. Have worked for three years with interact club (school wing of rotary) and two years with rotaract club (youth wing of rotary)
6. President if a social organization working in the field of helping underprivileged children
7. Have won many business plan competitions and debating events
8. Current College GPA is 3.3. It will most likely remain the same by the time I apply

What should be the target GMAT score to get a chance at top B-schools like Wharton, Stern, Sloan, Harvard and London business school

Can I get in through Harvard 2+2 program or any other similar well reputed program (if any, which?) ?

Please pour in some suggestions as I am very confused and need a direction for the future.

Hi,
There are also few other points that i would like to add
1. I am the management head of a 20 member team participating in SAE BAJA which is India's biggest automotive event.
2. My preferences include marketing or finance because these are the two fields in which I have been active in the college and during my part time work and have also developed a lot of interest in these fields.

Will the lack of full time work ex put a full stop to my top B-school hopes for now?
I am very keen on getting into a B-school right after college, if not the top ones, which business schools should I try for?
I know i have a lot of doubts, but please bear with me, I am just a starter and very keen for a top B-schools seat.

Hi pushkarsikka,

Thanks for your detailed post. I may not have answers to all your questions but I'll do my best.

Top schools do want to see some years of work experience to evaluate how you perform in the professional world. While you can try and address that with part-time jobs, it's unlikely to replace the value of full-time experience. While the required years of experience is definitely trending downward, there still aren't too many accepted applicants in top schools with zero years of full-time experience.

If you are determined to go straight to business school, you'll probably need to start looking below the top-25 schools to have your best chance at getting in, as work experience is a key part of all admissions criteria.

The HBS 2+2 program and Yale Silver Scholars are two programs that were created for students with mindsets like yours. I can't comment on your chances at these programs since you haven't taken the GMAT, but it does seem like you have some good work and community experience for someone of your age. To show that you can handle MBA coursework, you'd want to get that GMAT into the 700+ range, higher for Wharton/Harvard, to be competitive at the schools you listed.

I hope this was helpful and best of luck!

Thanks Daniel
Can You please suggest me ways through which I can compensate the lack of full time work ex in my profile.
The part time work ex wouldn't count at all?
Thanks

Hi again,

Yes the part-time work experience is probably the most obvious tool you have to address the lack of full-time experience. You'll want to spell out your responsibilities and accomplishments in these jobs very clearly so that the reader understands what skills you had to use and what leadership potential you have through this part-time work.

You can also address why NOW is the right time for you to get an MBA, despite the lack of full-time experience. Explain in your essays why it makes sense for you to get this degree now, rather than waiting a few years. How does the timing factor impact your short-term/long-term goals?

Hope this is helpful and good luck!
