In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs?

In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior while in some other countries, there is little or no censorship. In my opinion television and radio programs should be carefully censored for offensive language and behavior.

Television and Radio are popular and affordable entertainment for general public and airing offensive language and behavior is an insult to majority of the people. Taxpayers have a right and their desire to live in a decent way should be respected, this is not possible if most common type media such as Television and Radio use offensive language.

Lot of kids also watch television shows and listen to Radio. Exposure to offensive language will negatively affect the development of kids who do not have the ability to reason. As a result kids who watch offensive television content may grow up as criminals or abusive persons and may lack character and integrity. We may argue that it is the responsibility of Parents and Teachers to make sure kids are not exposed to such content but in this day and age when number of single parents is raising, it is not possible to monitor the kids all the and ensure the right environment. Moreover, if the parent herself is sick or have issues that will put the child’s future at risk.

We also need to recognize that censoring offensive language and behavior in radio and television is not the same as curtailing the free speech. Any decent society will have rules and regulations to the good of public and censoring offensive language and behavior in radio and television should be one of those. We also need to recognize that television and radio are not the only media, there are other source of media like magazines, newspapers and movies which can have more selective availability and need not have as stricter censorship as television and radio need to have.

In conclusion, the costs and benefits weigh heavily on the side of censoring offensive language and behavior in radio and television and all countries should strongly support such an effort. In the interest of securing the future of our kids, preserving moral values of our culture and simply maintaining a decent family life offensive language and behavior in radio and television should be censored.
