Hi Guest, let us look at 2 aspects of this sentence.

1) Subject - The author wishes to discuss about scholars, what they thought about native american literatures and what they understand about that now. Hence, the subject of the sentence should be Scholars. D and E are out.

2) Parallelism - for this sentence to have a 'that' between 'thought' and 'native', we would have probably required a 'that' between 'understand' and 'this'. In the GMAT, parallel structures are considered a priority.

B is grammatically incorrect. Use of 'had thought' in C is again incorrect as we are not talking about 2 actions happening in the past in a sequence.

A is hence the best choice. Hope this clarifies.

It makes sense when you said that it would need a "that" between "understand" and "this" if we were to put a "that" between "thought" and "native".

I could understand why other choices were wrong but its just this "that" was confusing. but now it looks better.

Thanks!

Hi Stacy,
I am not sure from the discussion why 'B' is wrong. Could you please explain it in detail?
Thanks

I verified question source :GMAT Prep software

Scholars who once thought Native American literatures were solely oral narratives
recorded by missionaries or anthropologists now understand this body of work to
consist of both oral literatures and the written works of Native American authors, who
have been publishing since 1772.
A. Scholars who once thought Native American literatures were solely oral
narratives
B. Scholars thinking of Native American literatures once solely as oral narratives,
and
C. Scholars who once had thought of Native American literatures solely as oral
narratives and
D. Native American literatures, which some scholars once thought were solely
oral narratives
E. Native American literatures, which some scholars once, thinking they were
solely oral narratives

Hi Instructors & Students,

Can you help explain why B & C is wrong. I'm guessing 'and' is the problem but I'm not sure why.

Thanks!

We'll need a screen shot since I can't find this listed as a GMAT Prep question on any other forums. Post a picture of this on GMAT Prep and we can discuss further.
