Hi, here are my essays. Please review.

"The best way to give advice to other people is to find out what they want and then advise them how to attain it."
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion expressed above. Support your point of view with
reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

========================+++

The statement argues that we need to understand the needs and goals of an individual before advising him. I support author’s point of view and believe that an advice given after taking into consideration the requirements of the person is the best advice possible.

Firstly by finding out what the other person wants, we can understand his needs, his aim in doing a particular job, his way of doing things and most importantly what he enjoys doing most. Based on these inputs we can tailor our advice, so that our advice is not conflicting with his needs. We can also modify our advice and provide options to achieve them in the ways he likes.

Secondly, when we ask the person about his needs and preferences, we can build a rapport with him and build a level of confidence. This will definitely help him to decide whether to take our advice or not.
Opponents may argue that, in many cases, where children are involved, or in situations where a person really does not know what he wants, or "˜what he wants’ is not "˜right’, this is not the right approach. Even in such cases, listening to them will give us an insight about their likings and we can help them to clear their misconceptions, before advising them.

In conclusion, knowing a person’s needs. likings and goals will definitely help in understanding the person better, there by will help us to give better advices. In addition the confidence we build in the person by such a gesture will increase the possibility of the person implementing our advice.

Analysis of an argument

The following appeared in a report presented for discussion at a meeting of the directors of a company that manufactures parts for heavy machinery:
"The falling revenues that the company is experiencing coincide with delays in manufacturing. These delays, in turn, are due in large part to poor planning in purchasing metals. Consider further that the manager of the department that handles purchasing of raw materials has an excellent background in general business, psychology, and sociology, but knows little about the properties of metals. The company should, therefore, move the purchasing manager to the sales department and bring in a scientist from the research division to be manager of the purchasing department."
========
The author attributes fall in revenues to delays in manufacturing. Further he argues that to better plan the purchase of metals, the existing manager should be replaced by somebody who is highly knowledgeable on metals. This argument has several flaws as described below.

Firstly the author makes a "˜False cause’ fallacy. Since the delay in manufacturing coincides with the fall in revenues, author assumes that delay in manufacturing is the reason for fall in revenues. This need not be true. Fall in revenues might have various other reasons like fall in demand, entry of new competitors, quality of product, price fluctuations etc. Fall in revenues and delays in manufacturing might even be just a coincidence.

Secondly, even if author may be right in assuming cause for the fall in revenues, his recommendation to replace the purchasing manager with somebody from research background or a scientist is very much flawed. Here author assumes that "˜Knowledge of metals’ is the only skill required for the manager. Even though this may be a key skill, the other skills in general business, sociology are crucial in making purchasing decisions.

In conclusion, author makes two serious assumptions, one by linking fall in revenues to delay in manufacturing; other is by assuming the skills needed for a purchase manager. Author can support his first argument by explaining how delay in manufacturing is causing fall in revenues. Author can strengthen his second argument by describing how manager’s lack of knowledge about the metals is affecting the deadlines of manufacturing.

Issue:
The primary responsibility of citizens is to obey their nation’s civil and criminal laws.
===========
The author says that primary responsibility for the citizens is to obey their nation’s civil and criminal laws. Even though the statement looks very simple and easy to agree, it makes certain assumptions about the laws. I agree with the statement, but also recognize that in some exceptional cases, the statement may not be valid.

Firstly, laws and regulations are basis of any civilized society. These laws provide the right directions to follow for every citizen. A society with no respect to laws is like a kite without a guiding thread. There should be a clear demarcation to decide between what is right and what is wrong. Here we assume that laws are not discriminatory against any society, religion or region.

Secondly, laws are also important to ensure that the weaker sections of the society are not downtrodden. These laws serve as the defensive instruments for the weaker classes of the society. For example, a society where there is no respect for laws would be dangerous for the weaker sections like women, children. The laws and the punishments they offer serve as a deterrent against such crimes.

However, as mentioned in the second paragraph, laws can protect a civilized society only if they are just and non discriminatory. A king, or an autocrat can form laws which may not be useful or just to the general public. In such cases protesting against such laws will be the right option for the citizens. Gandhi’s civil disobedience movement is the best example of that.

In sum, obeying laws deviced by a just and able government is always the duty of citizens. But if they feel that these laws are unjust and discriminating, they need to protest against such laws. 30mins

Hi, thanks for posting your essays! Just an FYI that instructors don't respond to posted essays - we just have too much to do with all of the question posted and essays tend to be the thing that is least "transferable" (that is, you can learn a lot, but probably other people won't learn as much from looking at our responses to your essays, unlike the multiple choice questions).

But I certainly hope other community members respond. Also, if you're in our class, you'll have an opportunity to get essays graded and get written feedback during the course (after class 6). We also offer an essay grading service - 2 essays graded and given written feedback. If you'd like to do this, send an email to studentservices@manhattangmat.com.
