AWA ESSAYS: Analyze Issues
ESSAY QUESTION:
"The mission of a university is to educate its students. Therefore, a professor’s pay and promotions should be based primarily on students’ evaluations of his or her courses."
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
YOUR RESPONSE:
A students' evaluation of his or her course is the most effective way to find out the performance of the professor but only as long as the student is totally honest about his or her feedback. The personal relationship of a student with his or her professor should not influence this feedback.Without a proper feedback there will be no other way to determine whether the teacher deserves the post or not.Only an interview does not determine whether the professor is capable or not.
The maximum a professor can do is give its best , rest is upto the students to make the most of it and just by seeing the final grade of the students is not the fair way to decide the pay and promotion of a teacher.By evaluating the response of the class is a better method.
There are many other things that a university is supposed to teach a student including the course undertaken ,such as how an individual will behave in society , how to help people or how to excel at your work are all that a professor only can teach their class. Just by evaluating the final exam result will not explain how good the professor is.
I myself had an anonymous survey of the professors of each and every course at the end of every semester. It gave us an opportunity to tell how well the course was taught or how effective the teacher was in delivering it to us.It also helped the administration to decide whether the professor should continue to deliver the same course to the next batch. This will in turn help the university to provide the best possible education to its students with the best teachers.
