"In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. In other countries, there is little or no censorship."
In your view, to what extent should government or any other group be able to censor television or radio programs? Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.
-----------
Censorship, as a concept, is an act that prevents media from broadcasting what is considered improper. Every society has its own principles and ideas on what proper behavior is. Therefore, it is inevitable that censorship patterns vary in different countries. However issues arising from the extent of censorship, regardless of the country, generally occur when the act of censoring is influenced by factors outside the principles and ideology of the society.
On one end is the extreme influence of censoring body, generally a government body, trying to assert its own principles and ideology on top and sometimes against that of the society’s. This normally leads to extreme results like even curbing the basic freedom of speech. Examples of these can be seen in countries like current day Zimbabwe.
On the other end of the spectrum is the total lack responsibility of the governing body, wherein it fails to adhere to even the basics of the society's principles. This results in media broadcasting what would be considered by most citizens as extreme behavior. Examples of these circumstances can be seen in some western media these days.
Both these types of involvement, results in adverse influence on the young ones of the society. They are suppressed and curtailed of their freedom and expression in the earlier case and are exposed to dangerous and extreme behavioral influence in the later.
The appropriate extent of involvement of the governing body is therefore something that falls somewhere between these two extremes. One way to find Where it falls is to appoint an individual committee, constituted by, members from different walks of the society, people who are not fanatic followers of any movement or organization and people generally considered to be responsible and sincere in what they do. The chances of such an independent committee determining what is acceptable being close to what the society thinks is acceptable is much more than when a government body is involved.
