Politics - singular / plural ?

What is GMAT's take on a sentence like the one below where the term 'politics' refers to not the subject but the games played by people ?

Politics of the situation was/were complicated.

I don't know that the GMAT has a unique opinion on the matter. The non-GMAT consensus seems to be that politics can be either singular or plural, depending on context.

In this context, it is plural: The politics ... were complicated.
