Possessive pronoun can refer to pronoun?

by Everything OR Nothing Sat Mar 15, 2014 5:40 am

After long time of indifferent reception by the science community, Baby's work on the genesis of corn has now been acknowledged to be of major importance; her analyses show that movable elements control the action of genes and thus cause mutations.

In the above sentence can her refer to someone when no person's name is clearly mentioned before? Only baby's work is mentioned.
how can we assume HER refers to baby?

Per the forum rules, please cite the source of the original sentence.

If it's from a problem with multiple choices, we need all the choices, too.

Thanks.
