Pre-Gmat profile evaluation

Hi,
I am in urgent need of help as I want to apply for an mba abroad for fall 2014 session. I have'nt taken up gmat yet as I wanted a pre evaluation my profile.
My profile is as below:
- 84.8 % in tenth
- a poor 67.5% in +2
- 6.95 gpa(out of 10) in Btech Computer Sci. from one of NITs
- 3 years of work ex in an IT company working in banking domain(US banks only)
- done average extra curriculars in college(have certificates and all)
- During 2.9 years of tenure in company I have recieved 2 top awards and even got an early promotion on performance basis.
- can get good letters of recommendation from manager and senior colleagues
I want to target tier1 and tier2 b-schools in US,europe,canada or may be australia. I feel my profile is a very average one thats why I am in dilemma whether I should take up Gmat this year or not. Do I stand a chance if I manage a decent score(700+) in gmat.And can you please suggest which schools should I target.Or should I wait for few more years and improve my profile. Since I am not enjoying my current job, I desperately want to go for higher studies to hone my skills.Should I consider doing MS by appearing in GRE instaed of GMAT?

Hello there!

Sounds like you have a lot to think about. An MBA can be a great way to switch career, especially if you are very clear on what it is you want to do in the future and why an MBA is the degree that will get you there. However, if you are not sure what you want to do at all (as in, it could be IT, it could be business or it could be architecture), then you should take a more thoughtful approach and perhaps wait longer. Just because you don't like your current job does not mean that an MBA is the right thing for you -- you could just as soon switch jobs, roles, companies, take time off.. there are lots of options!

As for your profile, I would say that a top (as in top 10) MBA would be a stretch - your academic profile is not too strong compared with other tier 1 applicants, and your professional and extracurricular history is similar to that of other Indian IT male applicants. 2nd tier is more likely, though. It's difficult to say in the absence of your GMAT.

You can always go for the GMAT now and see how you score and then decide. Your GMAT score is valid for a few years, so if it's a good score, you can still use it if you decide to apply in a couple years.

Yes I think full-time MBA is a good option for you. Though I am not a guru at advising people but one thing which I would tell everyone is to select a good school or university because down the line it matters a lot.
