Prepositional phrase + noun + verb’ing (only) == not a good

by JbhB682 Thu Apr 26, 2018 10:32 am

Hi Expert -

On my posts - i see the following construction mentioned as bad and used as a strategy to eliminate answer choices

Prepositional phrase + noun + verb’ing (only) == not a good construction

However i see this construction used in the idiom under Page 243 of the Manhattan SC guide (edition 8) -- idioms using "With"

RIGHT: The lions growled, WITH their fur STANDING on end
WRONG: WITH only 25% of the student body, seniors get 50% of the resources

Under the right statement ...following is the construction

<Subject+Verb: The lions growled> + <preposition: with> + <Noun : fur> + <Verb'ing - STANDING>

Could you assist please how this is considered right ?

Thank you

Where did you see this listed as a bad construction? I know there are some posts with long and (perhaps unnecessarily complicated) explanations about some issues that can occur with this construction, but there's certainly no reason to eliminate an answer choice simply because it has this construction.
