Princeton Review CR: The government is considering

by VP Tue Nov 04, 2008 8:08 pm

The government is considering legislation that would reduce tax benefits for parents opening college savings funds for their children. If passed, the new laws would result in greatly decreased tax benefits for parents who open such accounts. Therefore, if the new laws pass, many college-bound individuals will have difficulty covering their college costs, and some would not be able to attend.

The argument above assumes which of the following?

A) For most college-bound children, their parents’ savings accounts are the only source of educational funding.
B) The legislation is being considered because many parents were misusing savings funds dedicated to their children’s educational costs.
C) College-bound children cannot open savings funds separately from their parents.
D) Because of decreased tax benefits, some parents will not open college savings funds for their children.
E) Parents facing the new restrictions on college funds will find other investments to dedicate to their children’s educational costs.

OA: D.

Can someone please explain why "C" is wrong. It can be assumed from the constraints of the argument that if college bound children cannot open savings funds separately from their parents then many college-bound individuals will have difficulty covering their college costs.

thanks !

Conclusion - if the new laws pass, many college-bound individuals will have difficulty covering their college costs, and some would not be able to attend.

Your assumptions must be 100% true based on the premise and conclusion.

Can you tell by 100% confidence that statement C is always true using Premise and Conclusion.

My answer is BIG NO.

College-bound children can or cannot open savings funds separately from their parents. Who knows ?

I really fail to understand as to why A is not teh correct answer...

If the parents account is the only source of funding...then the argument stands

If there are other sources of funding ..even if tax is increased..how does it matter..

Can Ron or Stacey throw some light pls

Sanjay,

A is wrong because of word "ONLY source ". The word only make diference.

Otherwise A would have been valid.

Check similar problem from OG 10 - 195. This problem is designed on similar lines.

When asked to identify an assumption, be careful. The assumption would validate the conclusion, true; however, the assumption has to actually be at work in the argument somehow. Choice C is not at work here. In fact, nothing about college-goers saving their own money is mentioned at all. The word "cannot" is also too extreme.

The previous poster is also correct that "only" gets rid of answer choice A - too extreme.
