Profile Building for ISB

by Aadi_9 Mon Jul 22, 2013 4:21 am

Hi,

I am preparing for GMAT and have already given GMAT once but didn't score well to reach for ISB hyderabad. My target is ISB and I need to know how can I prepare my profile along with preparing for GMAT.
The issue is I do not possess exceptional charismatic profile.
10th - 78.80%
12th - 58% (unfortunate story)
B.E. - 74.20% in Electronics and Communication
Work Ex - IT-(US based MNC but in India) - 3 Years as Java Developer.

- Apart from this I was very much active in cultural and sports event in School as I acquired awards in almost everything that includes Cricket, Football, Dance, Extempore etc.

- Continued playing Cricket in my college and even currently in my company although do not recieve any awards but I am still active in the same.

- I am associated with various social activities and is actively associated with a Foundation taking care of people on streets and in Care homes especially children.
- I am also trying to set up a small team to take these social welfare activities to a higher level by conducting awareness camps near and around. But it still require to start off.

- I am a part of various Plantation drives across Pune for planting and adopting trees.

- As far as my work achievements are concerned, I am awarded Star performer for a cycle but the appreciations are limited to the amount of work I have done.
Worked for World's biggest Automobile company's project and acquired good experience on working directly with the client and on live application being used worldwide.

- I have started attending sessions related to business analysis in my company so as to have a better approach of business processes.

- I am associated with preparing for MBA from last few years but due to some other committments it didn't kicked like the way it had now. But I have continuosly worked on my reading habit and mostly on past and current affairs nad the link between them.
I am a good reader and read and research a lot of stuffs around be it current affairs or historical related stuffs or business related things.

So now my most important quetion is how can I enhance or improve the profile I possess?

- What else I can do being a normal IT guy to increase my chance for ISB?

- What should be my approach for ISB apart from GMAT score since I want to build my profile simultaneously as I have next around 3 months for 2nd round of ISB?

So please please help me in this stint.

Thanks a lot in advance...

Hi there,

It sounds like in terms of your overall profile and career and activities, you have demonstrated involvement, passion, dedication, and some leadership. You have a breadth of experiences you can draw from outside the work place. It is difficult to add too much with only a couple of months time, unless you were able to get that project off the ground that you mentioned. Otherwise what you could focus on in the coming month is spending time brainstorming about all of your experiences, traits, and skills... come up with what it is that makes YOU unique compared with others. Really showcase your people and project management skills, and your communication and leadership skills. Decide how you want to be remembered by the admissions committee, almost your own personal marketing messages. Work on brainstorming anecdotes and stories to demonstrate those key traits and points you want to get across, that you can use in your application. All of that takes a lot of time and effort! Good luck to you!

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks a ton for replying me and providing your suggestions.
Well, I am not completely sure about what ISB Hyderabad guys look in to a candidature. I mean other candidates somehow possess similar kind of work-ex, even more if they are 8-9 years of experience, even the sports activities are quiet common in applications as I have in mine.
So I am not sure how to present myself to the panel committe.

What I see about myself is whatever social activities I am doing or trying to do is something I believe in and something that can present some difference.
for example: I have created a short movie to present it into a competition in which it get selected then I will get fund to process my initiative of providing help to needy children in an orphanage in my town. Now this is something I am really serious about that's why I am trying to take time out of my work schedule and trying to do it.

Now the issue is how should I present this strong point of mine.

Apart from this I need some mentorship to how to create good resume and essays to be submitted to ISB.

I will be really grateful if I can get any guidance on anything and everything related to ISB Hyderabad admission Process.

Thanks in advance...:)

Hi Aditya,

I think you are on the right track in terms of pulling out some experiences you have that are unique, such as your social efforts and the movie project you mention. You are right in that many profiles are similar, BUT of course every individual is unique so it's just a matter of drawing out what YOU bring as a person to the table. ;)

The best way to do that is often to work with an experienced MBA admissions consultant and brainstorm together and decide on the main themes about you that you'd like to get across. If you are interested, we do offer a free 30-minute consultation where you can get your questions answered and discuss your profile more; if interested you can sign up at http://www.mbamission.com/consult.php.
