Profile eval and queries - Indian Male/IT 5.5 years/730 GMAT

by punjabiranjha2004 Wed Oct 17, 2012 3:16 am

Hi,

Please evaluate my profile below

Academics:
GMAT: 730
Grad: Engineer from NIT college in India with 3.0 GPA
12th: 86.6%

I have a total of 5.5 years of IT work experience (A top three international IT consulting firm), where
- Currently I am 'team leader' of a team of six employees spread across three India locations.
- Have been a regular trainer, conducting multiple training of batches of 15-20 employees for the company.
- Am involved in the hiring process of the company, and have visited Engineering Grad schools for hiring on company's behalf.

My Ideal target school is ISB, am also looking at INSEAD and London Business School.
I am targeting IT and IT consulting profiles after MBA graduation, and since I am looking for a profile change, not an industry shift, I would prefer a one-year program.

Considering I am smack in the middle of much famed Indian male IT demographic, please suggest on the following:
- Your take on my current choice of target schools.
- Which U.S. schools would suit my goals?
- I have very good relations with the U.S. based client I am working with, Would evals from the client help me build my case?
- I consistently got 750-760 in the GMAT prep tests, and I am very sure I can improve on the 730 score. Would retaking GMAT help?
- Have pretty much zero EC's because certain family and property matters demanded my attention. Is this a major issue? Should I build a case of the family stuff I was spending my time on?

Hi,

Thanks for submitting your profile. I gather that you are currently in an IT consulting role, and that you are looking to leverage an MBA to accelerate your development within this field. Is that correct?

I think your professional experience is on the stronger end of the demographic, so that is good. Your GMAT is also very strong, though your GPA seems low (this could be a conversion issue - what was your percentage?). Your lack of ECs and community is an issue, but perhaps the support you gave your family is a strong story that deserves to be part of your application. It's possible that if the story is strong enough, you could overcome the lack of ECs/community work.

To answer your questions:
1. I think your targets are reasonable. They are not guarantees, but they are certainly possible. I would add some safeties as well.
2. There are many US programs that would suit your goals... I would need more specifics around what you are looking for to better guide you. Nearly all programs would gear you for a life in consulting, given that they are general management programs.
3. I don't think client testimonials are necessary if you have very strong recommendations from your managers, etc., but if they ask for supplementary letters, it can't hurt!
4. Definitely would not retake the GMAT. The difference between a 730 and 750 is marginal. Spend time on the applications.
5. Answered above.

Hope this helps!
