Profile evaluation and school suggestion

by awasthiachyut1990 Sun Jun 01, 2014 9:14 am

Please evaluate my profile:
Nationality : Indian
Age: 24

GMAT : 720(Q51, V35, IR8, AWA?)
- Not very high in my applicant pool (Indian+Engineer)
-Skewed away from VA

Acads:
- GPA: 8.43/10 from BITS Pilani(top 10 college in the country)

WE:
- Almost 2 years at Texas Instruments as Analog Design Engineer.
(Semiconductor mfg industry, not IT which is the more common background)
- Relatively new to the job but a good growth rate.
- Some leadership initiatives shown at work

Voluntary roles:
- Worked with a couple of social org at colleges
- Have been teaching at a local school for underprivileged children every Saturday for the last 2 years as part of the corporate CSR activity. Organized some science exhibits

Others:
- Completed 3-4 humanities electives in college: History, International relations, Modern Pol Concepts etc.
- Coursera courses like Strategy, Operations, Economics

Please evaluate this profile and give your suggestions.

Other questions:
1. Do I need to retake the exam, the score being slightly low and slightly skewed?
2. What programs should I apply to (relatively less WE)?
3. Given that I am prepared to wait a couple of years more, what steps can I take to further strengthen my profile?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there--
I believe I answered your post on another forum; pasting my response below, thanks!

Hi there,

Thanks for posting, and good for you for planning ahead. That should help you in the long run, and it's nice to get the GMAT out of the way so you're not doing GMAT prep and application essays at the same time if you can help it. I wouldn't stress about a 720... you're at or near the average of all top schools in the world, and unless you think you'd make a big difference on a re-take (tough) it's not likely worth it... you can invest time/energy in other areas such as your essays!

I would recommend working another year or two, and within your professional experience, seeking out where you can make an impact on people and projects; where you can take on leadership roles if possible; where you can lead teams. Certainly any accomplishments are a plus. Getting involved even more in a community activity or event or role would be a plus.

And you've got time to research schools. Identify what your personal goals are, why you want the MBA, and what geographic area you'd like to live/work in. Spend time getting to know the schools online. Good luck to you! Come back as you have more q's in the coming year/s.
