Profile evaluation - early career applicant

by hello313 Sun Jan 17, 2010 12:55 am

Hi, can anyone help evaluate my profile? I'm an early career applicant (~3 years of experience) and I'm wondering if anyone can give me some perspective as to where I stand in admissions.

I'm an early career applicant (will have 3 years of experience when I start):
3.5 undergrad GPA in Chemistry, minor in Econ from Dartmouth
760 GMAT (50Q/45V)
US Citizen, 25 years old, Vietnamese-American Male
Will have 3 years of work experience in operations research consulting (I was recently promoted to associate) by the time I start next fall:
-managed large portions of projects, supported by junior team members
-helped create new offerings for projects
-participated in sales work (presentations/conference calls)
-presented to executives/C-levels on engagements
-did some consulting gigs internationally

Minimal/moderate extracurricular experience in college (spent a couple of years as one of the executive editors for a new student-run publication, also have a bit of volunteer work). No extracurriculars since college though due to workload.

I'm shooting for the following B-schools:
HBS
Wharton
Kellogg
Sloan
Columbia
Tuck

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your question.

I think your work experience and progression sounds like you are on the right track, but of course it is difficult to judge the "impact" you have made based on the responsibilities you listed below. Would you say that your promotion was an "early" promotion?

Your undergraduate institution, grades and GMAT score are pretty strong, but the limited extra-curricular activities both during school and after school will be a weakness for you. I think that Harvard, Stanford and Wharton will be reaches, but if your personal story is unique and your leadership experiences at work are strong, you could be competitive at Columbia and Sloan, especially given the fact that these applications do not request a lot of information related to extra-curricular activities. Tuck could be a reasonable choice as well, but a strong application will highlight broad experiences (professional, personal, global and extra-curricular).

Best of luck with the application process!
