Profile Evaluation for Part Time Programs

by robertefleck Sun Aug 15, 2010 7:46 am

Hi, I would really appreciate help in understanding my chances at the schools listed below. I hear a lot about full times admissions criteria to them, but far less about part time criteria. Heres is my profile:

660 GMAT (Q47, V34), Male, native english, age 27 with 4 years work experience (sales for legal tech industry leader) at matriculation, 3.7 GPA (B.A. Criminal Justice) from low tier state school (Wright State), lots of extra curriculars (high school hockey coach, church leadership, civic justice non-profit volunteer). I think that's everything. Here are the programs I am interested in, in as-of-now order of preference (it changes):

Ross School of Business (Ann Arbor, MI), U of M, Weekend Program
IE Business School (Madrid, Spain), Global MBA Online
Indiana University (Bloomington), Kelley Direct MBA Online
Thunderbird School of Global Management, Distance Learning MBA Program
Penn State University, Online MBA

Hi robertefleck,

Thanks for writing. I agree that a lot of the information out there is focused on full-time programs. Part-time programs tend to mirror their full-time counterparts to a certain extent, but the schools will also be interested in knowing why you are seeking a part-time program. You appear to be applying to a wide mix of programs -- from traditional part-time to international schools to online. While I don't have in-depth knowledge of those programs, from the limited information you provided it looks like a good mix for you, with the Ross program potentially being a reach.

Best of luck,

Daniel Richards

Thanks Daniel,

I do know that Ross is my biggest reach school. They also provide the best statistics on their part time program of any of the schools listed above, which is helpful: http://www.bus.umich.edu/Admissions/PTMBA/WeekendProfile.htm (thier average GMAT is 657).

The most common denominator between the schools is that they are well regarded schools that I can do from my current location. The second most common denominator is that they have a good international reputation (Ross, IE, Thunderbird) and good corporate responsibility aspects (Ross, IE). Thanks for your help - I would not have thought that they would want to know why I am considering part time as opposed to full time.
