Profile Evaluation - GMAT 640, diff. profile

by APN Sun Aug 26, 2012 5:12 pm

Hi App Experts,

Here's another peculiar case..looking for some honest and encouraging feedback

Education:
IIT-B (Indian Institute of Technology - Bombay)
Overall GPA 7.7/10 (First Class); Bachelors Degree in Mech. Engg.
Undergraduate Thesis published in an International Journal of Manufacturing.
Top of class in the final semester with a Semester GPA 9.6/10

Work Ex:

Schlumberger Oilfield Services (~4yrs)
1.5yrs in Brazil (currently based), 2yrs in North Africa (Tunisia, Algeria), small stints in Qatar, France
- Senior Field Engineer; leading international crews of 8-10 for high profile clients. learnt and speak Portuguese to work with local crews and client.
- Won several awards, international client recognition
- 2 promotions in 3.5 yrs, performance based: pay rise and transfer to Brazil (booming energy market)
- Incharge of a big technology project, that could significantly increase the co.'s market share; working directly with the Global Tech. Champion, R&D centre,France
- Up for 3rd promotion by end of this year (post which I will move out of the field, to management -office based)

Internships:
GE Healthcare (John F Welch Technology Centre, Bangalore- India)
- Using concepts of Lean Manufacturing, achieved a 2/3 reduction in tool assembly time for one of its product lines.
- Presented it to the audit team from Buc, France. Changes suggested were implemented.
- Received a verbal job offer to work for GE post graduation

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Mumbai- India
- Conducted a study on the role of technology in the Retail Industry

Extra Curriculars:

Hospitality Manager, Techfest (IIT-Bombay's annual science and tech. festival, footfall of 30,000 visitors, largest of its kind in Asia)

Football
- Gold Medal at Inter-IIT (sporting meeting of all 7 IITs nationwide)
- Captain of Football Club that came 2nd in in the Institute Football League
- Gold medal, Inter-hostel Sports Championship, IIT-B
- Several awards and recognitions

Languages - Speak fluent English, Portuguese, Basic French
Marathon - Ran the 21km Mumbai marathon in 2.3 hrs.

GMAT: (weakest link in the profile)
First attempt- 640 Q48, V28
Second attempt- 640 Q47, V30

Target Schools:
US - Any Top 15 where I stand a good chance
Europe - LBS, INSEAD, IESE (not sure how it fares globally, though FT ranked it in Top 10)

Although I know I should give the GMAT again, as it clearly is below par at most schools I'm aiming at and doesn't reflect a true measure of my verbal abilities, my current work load and the low motivation (of having faltered a second time for reasons I still haven't been able to figure out)
are big obstacles in me taking it again. And I want to apply this year and a bit confused as to where all I should focus my energies.

I want to pursue business strategy/ general management post MBA

Looking forward to your suggestions.
Cheers

Hello!

You've got a pretty stellar college academic record, which may help offset your GMAT score to some degree, but may not be enough. Further, I think that although you fall into that "Indian Male Engineer" demographic (an 'overrepresented' demographic for MBA programs), I think your manufacturing experience is unique, as is your international experience. You've worked for very impressive companies and seems like you've been consistently promoted/considered as top talent in your organization. I also see a fair amount of professional leadership capacity, and college leadership as well (football team captain, etc.).

The only thing I see missing in addition to a strong GMAT score is consistent post-college community and extracurricular leadership activities. This will likely be a gap in your profile.

The silver lining is that the adcoms do weight the quant portion of the test slightly more than they weight the verbal, so they'll see that you have the analytic capability they seek. As for demonstrating your verbal/communications skills, this you'll have to do through the application itself -- write strong essays and speak clearly and articulately in interviews. I agree that retaking the GMAT is not likely to be a great use of your time at this point.

As for top 15 programs -- you're a bit of a wildcard candidate :) I would say you could try for UVA, Cornell, Tepper but I would also suggest that you add some safer, non-top 15 schools to your list (maybe Texas, Georgetown...depending on your interests/criteria). I think LBS and INSEAD are going to be tough... you should have a shot at IESE (well-reputed internationally).

Hope this encourages you!
Mili

Hi Mili,

Thanks for the encouraging feedback!

I agree my academic record won't really help offset the GMAT at most top programs, and my over-represented brotherhood demographic doesn't really help either :)

I can justify the post-college community and extracurricular leadership activities due to the nature of my field work and extensive travelling that I need to do. I don't really have a fixed schedule and I'm never sure where I'll be in the next few days.

Verbal - essays, Recos are the only way out I guess to prove my verbal skills to the AdComs.

As far as my wildcard candidacy is concerned,
-what about a shot at UCLA Anderson, Haas and Stern?
-is IESE worth the investment-ROI for a Top MBA?

Cheers.

I think Haas will be a bit tough... UCLA and NYU are possibilities, but still not guarantees by any means.

I'm not sure I can answer your ROI question for IESE -- I think it really depends on what you're looking to get out of an MBA program. It's not just about higher salaries! It's a pretty personal and subjective ROI equation, so you'll have to calculate it yourself based on your criteria and goals.

Best of luck,
Mili
