Profile Evaluation...need advice

by mlofaro Sat Oct 02, 2010 9:43 pm

Hello, I just took the GMAT for the second time and actually scored lower than last time. My best score is 690(Q42, V42) but I am planning to apply to some top schools all in Round 2: Kellogg, Duke, Chicago, Stanford, Berkeley. Given the rest of my profile would you recommend spending the time to study for a 3rd retake? Do I have a fairly decent shot at these schools with this score as is? Thanks!

F, 28 at matriculation, American
GPA: 3.8 Arizona State University

Work Experience: 6 years at matriculation, good progression of responsibilities, started as a media buyer in an advertising agency, I now handle the national marketing campaigns/brand management for SuperShuttle, which has about 30 locations I oversee.

After MBA goal: Move into product management in a consumer packaged goods company, to handle more of the design and concepts for products and be involved in all the marketing stages of that product.

Extra Curricular: I am an artist, sell and commission works. I have 3 years experience volunteering with Free Arts of Arizona, being a mentor to at-risk children by sharing the healing prospects of art.

Hi mlofaro,

Thanks for writing in. It sounds like you have some good work experience to talk about as well as extracurriculars that will help differentiate you. Given your post-MBA goal, I particularly think this will resonate well at Kellogg.

The one thing to look out for is that your GMAT is a touch on the low side for these top-tier schools. If you are certain that these are the only schools you want to consider, and you think a higher GMAT is possible, I believe it could really give your entire profile a big boost to add another 20 points or so.

If practice tests indicate this is unlikely, then you may want to consider any evidence in your transcript or work experience that shows you can handle MBA-level academics.

Good luck!
