Profile Evaluation Please

by AlexandraM39 Mon Sep 08, 2014 4:48 pm

Hello,

Below is my profile. Any feedback is welcome and appreciated, though I am specifically seeking advice on whether I should re-write my test.

Background: Female, Canadian
Undergraduate: Top 10% of my class all 4 years; 2 years in biology/premed (4.0 GPA) and 2 years and a degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business(3.9 GPA) - side note, my school was entirely case method, does this look good on my app considering that many MBA programs are heavily cased based?
Work experience: By the time I apply, 3 years at an MBB firm and 3 summers in tech/engineering consulting
Extracurriculars: A bit of everything including career counselling, founding and co-chairing conferences, research work in HR/Organizational management, mentorship program leader etc
GMAT: IR 8, Q49 (79%) and V38 (85%)
Post MBA goals: Initially, continue working in consulting (2-3 years); later, I'd like to become a guest lecture/professor at a university while working in hospital management (I have a background in science and hope to gain consulting experience in health care); I also hope to add business to my side interests like culinary arts as I want to finance and manage up-and-coming chefs' restaurants

I am worried that I come from an overrepresented industry that generally scores very well on the GMAT so my score will look low in comparison. Moreover, I have scored significantly higher in verbal on practice tests (44-45) and so I feel like I've left points on the table. With that said, my 49 in quant is the best math score I've received yet.

I am aiming for top ten schools and intend to apply in 3-4 years.

Thank you!

Hi there,

Thanks for posting. So if I'm understanding correctly, you are still in or just finished undergrad, and planning for applications several years from now? What was your actual overall GMAT score? Certainly the sub-scores sound excellent.

It's great that you are planning ahead as hopefully you will be ahead of the game when it comes time to get serious about applying. At the moment your goals sound a bit 'scattered' ;) but you are young and there is time to further define them!

Keep us posted on q's and let me know the answers to my q's above and happy to further advise.

Thanks for responding! My overall score was a 710. I just finished undergrad (21 yrs old) and will be applying in the next few years. My main goal is to get into teaching. I'm willing to do a PhD after my MBA, or, just go into "business" again and become a guest lecturer. I already do have some research experience on my CV and hope to continue it. I want to teach at the business undergrad or graduate level so I hope to pursue an MBA to get an idea of what program I'd be teaching in, as well as build a valuable network because I would like to do some VC work on the side (i.e. the financing restaurants part).

I particularly worried that I look low in comparison to my peers who score well above 730.

Hopefully that helps a bit. Please let me know if any other data would be useful.

Gotcha, thanks for clarifying.

Well if you are on the fence, it doesn't hurt to give it one more shot if you feel you could do better, and if you've prepped recently then it's better to re-take sooner rather than later.... there's a margin of error such that you may test higher just doing it on a different day anyway, you never know, but you would want to do some extra last min prep as well if so.

Good luck on the process!
