Profile Evaluation Pls...

by nehag84 Mon Dec 07, 2009 6:41 pm

Hello,

I would appreciate it if you could give me some advice on my profile and the schools I should target at:

I am an Indian female - just turned 25.

Under-graduate education : 2002 - 05 - Majored in maths and economics. Total percentage 58.86 (doesn't look too great but marks were not rewarded liberally. 67% was the highest score received by the univ topper.

Graduate education: 2005 - 07 - Directly went on to do an MBA from India; majored in Human Resources. Total CGPA - 4.18 out of 5 (Top 5% of batch).

Work Exp: May 2007 - Dec '08 - Worked as an HR assistant Manager in the BPO industry. Left in Dec as was getting married and relocating to USA with my husband. Was rewarded with one bronze and 2 silver certificated while I was there.

Jan 09: Moved to USA and applied for a work permit.

May 09: Received my work permit but no work!

In the meantime took my GMAT. Scored 720. 94 percentile - V/M : 87 percentile in both. AWA : 5.5

Have started working as a volunteer for an old age day care home since October 09.

Extra-curricular activities:

Got a few articles published in newpapers
Was part of Alumni team in MBA college for 2 years
Was president of my course in UG college for 1 year
Participated in numerous contests and social service opportunities through-out school and UG college.

I want to get a second MBA to broaden my horizons and get a global exposure. I want to get into a consulting role and thus need solid grounding in all functions, and not just HR.

Schools targeted: Michigan Ross, Chicago Booth, Duke and Cornell.
Schools considering: HAAS, Columbia, Kellogg, Emory, Harvard...

Request you to kindly advice on my list of schools as well as my profile. Are there any extra things that I can do to make it more "acceptance call attractive"... ?

Thanks,

Thank you for your inquiry and congratulations on such a strong GMAT.

Your first question should be to answer whether the schools on your list accept students who already have MBAs. Some do but others do not and will not make an exception. If your target schools do, be sure to indicate very clearly how the second MBA differs from the first and fits in to your overall goals.

In terms of your profile, your grades are solid and your GMAT strong, you have some good college extracurriculars and you do seem to have a vision as to why you need the MBA. The areas that could use strengthening - or that you just haven't given me enough information on - are around current community activities, and primarily around work experience. You have about 1.5 years, but it's unclear how much leadership or initiative you were able to demonstrate in that role. Also, because of the work visa issue, it has been a year since you worked. If your current volunteer work fits in your career path, then that becomes a logical step, but if it is just something to fill your time (which is still quite important to the committee), then strengthening your work experience becomes the biggest area I see. I know that given the state of the economy that's not a very encouraging answer however. I think that there are schools that might be good choices for you, but given the limited work experience, the ones you list strike me as stretches.

Best of luck,

Jessica
