Profile Evaluation

by timothy.schlock Tue May 18, 2010 11:37 am

I recently completed the GMAT exam and was wondering if I'm competitive for a Top 10 program - looking primarily at Booth, Wharton or Stern.

Here is my overall information:
- GMAT - 710 92% (40 V 89%; 47 Q 78%; AWA 4.5)
- UG GPA - 3.3 at top 50 US program - grades improved continually throughout the 4 years
- Earned both the CPA and CFA designations
- 3 years of public accounting experience - promoted early to senior associate - led teams of 5-10 people
- 4+ years of equity research (investment banking) experience in senior associate position at top tier firm (just below bulge bracket)
- Started 3 separate restaurants in the local area over the last 3 years - currently own the restaurants while working in banking.

From what I have read, I believe that my low GPA will put me at a disadvantage. However, I wonder if my post college experience (e.g. CPA, CFA, banking experience, rest. ownership, etc) would overcome this weakness.

Any advice regarding my chances at a Top 10 program would be appreciated.

Hi -

Your GPA will be at the lower end of the ranges for some of the top 10 programs but it should be offset by your strong GMAT and the CFA. Further, the upward trajectory throughout college is a good thing to see. You could consider trying to build an alternative transcript if you have time to take 1 or 2 classes.

Regarding your competitiveness at a top 10 programs, it's hard to gauge with limited information, but schools will also look at your extracurriculars and involvement since school. Your entrepreneurial experience is definitely a plus.

Lastly, based on the info you provided, it sounds like you have over 7 years of work experience which may put you at the cusp of what some may see as a better fit for part-time programs. You will need to clearly explain why the MBA is right for you now.

Best,
