Profile Evaluation

by wguo23 Thu Jul 01, 2010 12:36 pm

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if I could get some frank advice regarding my admission prospects. Here is my current profile:

Undergrad: Gold Medalist from a mid-ranked Canadian business program
GMAT: 770 Q51 V44... don't have the essay mark back yet (just wrote the GMAT yesterday)
Work Experience: None... just graduated, but will be pursuing the Chartered Accountant designation at a large CA Firm
Extracurriculars: Two club executive positions during undergrad and commissioned a charity with the aim to provide free tax consulting to low-income families
Prospective Schools: Ivy League business schools, MIT, Northwestern, and Oxford

Since I currently do not have any work experience, I was wondering whether I should apply after two years, or three years of full time work. Also, I recently read that the "Next Generation" GMAT would be coming out June 2012; would this pose any complications when I apply to MBA programs? I am worried that I will have to rewrite the GMAT, which will make my current GMAT efforts all for nought. Thanks!

Hi wguo23,

Congratulations on a great GMAT score and for thinking about an MBA so far in advance. The new GMAT format was just announced a few weeks ago so there do not appear to be many details yet on how schools will use the new scores. Still, there will likely be a grace period of a few years where schools will accept either the new or old format, so I would not be too concerned at this point.

Since you are just starting your career, it is likely that your post-MBA goals are unclear. I suggest navigating the first 1-2 years of your career with an MBA in mind, and thinking about where the advanced degree could get you. After a year or so, your ideal application time may become clearer. If you plan to apply to the top schools you listed, a third year of work experience will likely only help your cause.

Best of luck in starting your career!
