Profile Evaluation

by ayushagarwal88 Sat Oct 20, 2012 11:19 am

Hi All,
First and foremost I wanted to thank everyone here at Manhattan GMAT for all their insight and helpful advice.
I have finally worked up the nerve to ask for a profile evaluation. I'm ready to receive my diagnosis (for better or worse) and am looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Nationality: Indian

Work Ex:
28 months of IT experience in top most MNC in India
Starting up a Non-profit organization for teaching children

Under Grad Education:
Computer Science Engg
cumulative gpa: 3.3

GMAT score: 630 Q47 V29

Decent HSc and SSc

Co Curricular
Starting up a non profit ngo for educating children
Active member of university event management
National level swimmer in school
Was a cadet in air force for 2 years

I have shortlisted few schools on my GMAT score

Please review

Michigan State Broad
Illinois Urbana Champaign
Pennsylvania Smeal
Purude Krannert
Texas Mays
Babson Olin
Wake Forest
Iowa Tippie

I am a bit skeptical writing my GMAT again. I wish to stay with this score as of now.
If, in any case, I don't get through with any of school. I'll be left with no other option writing GMAT again.

Please advice.

Hi Ayush,

Sorry for the delay responding to your profile evaluation request! Thanks for the nudge :)

As you know, you fall into the Indian Male IT professional demographic. Your academics are not too, but you are differentiated in two ways: non profit start-up and air force cadet experience. Now, the extent to which these two things standout in your profile depends on the extent to which you excelled, demonstrated leadership and succeeded in each role.

If you wish to stick with your score, then you are probably aiming at the right tier of programs. It's tough though - I think if you were to improve your score to the 670+ range, it would open up some more options for you.

Hope this helps as a starting point. Good luck!
Mili

Hi Mili,

Thank you for your reply.

I will surely reconsider writing my exam again.
Would you like to distinguish schools in safe, reach etc categories.
Moreover, I am open to Non-US schools as well. Could you please guide me which Non-US schools fit in my profile.

Thank you

Hi Ayush,

I wouldn't really have a great way to categorize these programs as reach/target/safe -- they have pretty similar acceptance rates, so it's difficult to say.

Whether you are applying for non-US or US schools, it really depends what you want out of a program. It's difficult for me to recommend programs in a vacuum as there are many potential options of schools you could get into... it's more important to know what you want to get out of a program, and try to find a match from both sides!

I'd suggest you first figure out what you want from an MBA program, what your career goals are, etc., and then start researching programs that have median/average GMAT scores that are close to your score and that have the qualities/curriculum you seek. That is a good starting point.

Good luck!

Hi Mili,

Thank you for the response.
Personally I am more inclined towards being a computer analyst, an investment banker or an entrepreneur.
Would you help me categorize schools on the basis of my interest and profile

Thank you

Ayush,

If you'd like to be a computer analyst, I don't believe the MBA is a good fit for you. Babson is a very strong entrepreneurship program. I unfortunately cannot speak to the strengths of the other programs you've listed, as I'm not as familiar with their offerings.

Best of luck,
Mili
