Profile evaluation

by victorianne33 Fri Dec 28, 2012 11:51 am

Hi, I recently scored higher on the gmat than I expected- I had been planning to apply to mid range schools but am wondering if I might be competitive for top ten schools and would like feedback on how my profile compares. Top target schools are Harvard, Stanford, Tuck and Duke. My background is in nonprofit and social enterprise and I am looking for a program that has a heavy focus on organizational management in the nonprofit sector.

Stats

Gmat
Quant 44 63%
Verbal 42 96%
Total 710 92%

College: graduated cum laude (3.7 gpa), phi beta kappa

Work experience: 6 years in the nonprofit sector doing development, communications and grant writing work for nationally recognized start-up nonprofits and social enterprises. Held 2 positions with significant reponsibility for development department operations, often managing department fundraising goals and leading small teams to complete projects. Currently living in rural Malawi for a year as a development consultant with an internationally recognized health NGO where I manage several Malawian staff to implement our donor partnerships.

Extracurricular: volunteer long distance running coach for half marathon and ten miler training programs, mentor to a high school student, travel photography

I'm curious about how my nonprofit experience will be viewed by adcom- I have thought it might give me an advantage but would love to hear if that's true. Also curious how my somewhat lopsided gmat score will be received. Thanks for your help!

Hello!

I think your nonprofit experience, though nontraditional, is quite strong, and would be an advantage. Your academics are strong -- the only weakness there is the low quant score. You could overcome this with supplementary coursework in accounting, finance, or statistics. Finally, you've got great extracurriculars. All in all, I think yes, you'd be considered at a top 10 program, with the low quant score being your biggest weakness.

Go for it! I'd also suggest looking at UC Berkeley - very strong program in non-profit management.

Best of luck,
Mili
