Profile Evaluation

by jyotsnanath77 Tue Feb 19, 2013 4:52 am

I'm 35 year old female from India. I took GMAT a few days ago and scored really low 510 (Q33, V27). I didn't follow the right strategies, spent a lot of time on early questions and ran out of time on the last 7+ questions. I think that is what reduced my score overall.
I have a masters degree in IT from Manipal Academy of Higher Education topping my study center with 72% (Excellent or A Grade) and a bad BCom result of just 50% from Rajasthan university.
I have over 10 years of experience in IT consulting industry in technology Sales for US market.
Could you please suggest if i should retake GMAT ( i can do after Mar 15 at the earliest)? Or should i target some schools right away. I'm looking to do MBA full time in Marketing in US business school in Fall 2013. Do you believe that i could be a good fit for B-schools ranking from top 20-50 per USNews.com?
I can write good essay.
I'm also a little skeptical that my application could be turned down due to my age.

Thank you,
Jyotsna

Hi Jyotsna,

I think your concerns are well founded regarding your age, your GMAT score and your low undergraduate GPA. To be honest, I think with your low scores, it may be tough to get into a top 35 program. You might have to adjust your expectations to be much lower.

If I'm understanding correctly, you'd like to begin a full time MBA in the US in Fall 2013? The additional challenge that you are going to face is that at this point, you'll be applying Round 3 to most programs, and it's quite difficult to get admissions in Round 3.

All in all, I think you should try to apply to some low tier schools for R3 and see what happens - though the odds are stacked against you, there's always a possibility!

Best of luck,
Mili
