by bhat_nakul Thu Apr 25, 2013 10:14 am

Dear Consultants,
I am A 3rd year engineering undergrad from India and i need advice on how to build my profile from this point onward so that i stand a chance to get into some of the best MBA programs.

My profile as of today

Academics:
82% in 10th grade (ICSE Board)
78% in 12th grade (State Board)
Currently in my 6th semester B.E in Industrial Engineering and Management.

Extracurricular Activities:
State level swimmer and member of high school swim team.
District level cricketer, captained and played many under 19 league matches. Was the captain of my high school cricket team as well.
Also represented my high school in various inter school basketball and volleyball tournaments.
After a spinal injury i quit sports and took up drumming.
I have been playing for 4 years now, with a lot of stage experience.

Did an internship with 3M India where my objective was to find the market potential for 2 of their products.
Completed a green belt level course in six-sigma and lean six-sigma from JURAN institute.

I have just started my GMAT prep and i need to know how much more i should build my profile in order to stand a chance of getting into one of the top universities.
Also, how much work experience do i require once i graduate?

Thank You
mili

Hello,

It's great that you are preparing so early. In terms of getting into a top MBA program, there are many things you can do now to be set-up to be competitive:

1. Get actively involved in a community/nonprofit/NGO organization that you are passionate about. Continue and expand your leadership role after college. Make significant impact on the organization and its constituents.

2. Enter a career that will expose you to business decision-making and teamwork. Ideally, you'll enter a field that will allow you to move up quickly, take on leadership opportunities, etc. If you can stay away from an IT career, you'll be better positioned as far as MBA competitiveness goes ... it's the unfortunate reality!

3. Take your extracurricular activities to the next level (or take on new activities where you can demonstrate leadership). Maybe you can't play sports anymore, but can you coach them? Maybe you are just a drummer now, but can you start a band and make it successful?

3. Score well on the GMAT.

4. Demonstrate leadership in everything you do!

Hope this helps as starter advice. You'll ideally want 3-5 years of full time work experience before applying to business school.

Good luck,
Mili
