Profile evaluation

by pepper.omi Wed Mar 26, 2014 5:53 am

Age: 24
Sex: Female
Nationality: Indian

Undergraduate:
B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from one of the top 10 engineering colleges of India. GPA: 7.32 on a scale of 10

12th CBSE: 83%
10th CBSE: 89%

Was involved in extra-curriculars during my undergrad. Leadership position in college Quiz Club, Cultural fest and placement cell.

GMAT expected score: 720 to 740

Work-experience
Here where it gets interesting, and dicey from an MBA perspective.
I started my career in the supply chain of a global FMCG giant. However, I was quick to realise that operations was not for me.
I had always been fascinated by brands and advertising, so moved to advertising. Currently working as a copywriter in a reputed agency, working directly under one of the ad gurus of India.

So summing it up.
FMCG Supply Chain: 1 year (Supply Chain trainee)
Design Studio : 1 year ( Copywriter)
An international advertising agency: 1 year, and continuing (Copywriter)

I have created campaigns, been at the helm of brand launches, have a strong experience in digital and social media marketing, and can pitch myself as someone with a combination of creative+analytical skills.
However, my predicament arises from my rather obtuse career jump - how far I can justify that. Post MBA, I intend to move into brand management.
What are my chances in marketing schools like Kellogg, Fuqua, Ross, Booth for the 2015 admissions? A wanton shot at Wharton, however unlikely that may seem?

Hi there,

Thanks for posting. Hmm, so your concern is your career change? Certainly career changes happen, and ideally your more recently chosen career fits with the MBA degree and what you envision your post-MBA career to look like... and in this case it sounds like it does, as that is all in marketing/brand management, correct? So you would just explain in your application/interview about your decision to change roles, and what about marketing appealed to you, etc.

I would actually say there could be a little bit of a question raised about lack of leadership or management potential demonstrated, or experienced? Perhaps it's the fact that in the US a 'copywriter' is often someone with a very straightforward role of writing copy...without much management opportunity or ability to think above and beyond, influence others, etc. That said, in the way you describe your role, it sounds like a lot more than that....

Without knowing your GMAT for sure it's going to be tough to advise on tier of school. But schools are looking for qualified female applicants, so with a strong score and a compelling application, you could have a shot at some strong programs. Probably best shot at those outside top 15 or so, but you may want to apply to a range of schools for best chances and options.

Good luck and keep us posted!
