Profile Evaluation

by swapnilsaykar Sat Aug 01, 2009 1:23 pm

Hello,

It will be great if I can get my profile evaluated.

I gave GMAT last week and scored a 730 (V:41, Q:49). This is the second time I have given GMAT; last year I scored a 680 (V:35, Q: 48).

I finished my undergrad in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from Pune University, India, with a GPA of 3.8 out of 4. I am working in Texas Instruments in Sales and Marketing for ~3+ years. Currently, I am taking care of the sales of an area in Western India and manage this by leading a team of distributors. Previous roles include one year marketing rotation as a technical sales associate in Dallas, Texas and one year as an account manager taking care of sales of key automotive accounts in India.

During my undergraduate studies, I led a team, which won the National Level Robotics Competition in IIT, Mumbai (one of the premier engineering institutes in India). Apart from this, I have been associated with a few school teaching projects for the past 5 years and last year successfully developed digital teaching content, which will aid teaching without teachers in schools.

I am looking at the top 10 universities in US and will apply in the first round this year. Please let me know my chances. Thanks a lot!

Hello,

You have a strong background, with high grades and seem to have a positive trajectory at work in a well-respected corporation. In my experience, people with technical backgrounds often focus, understandable, on their technical skills and achievement when applying to business school. I would urge you to focus on demonstrating your leadership of people and the impact that you have had on your teams, department, clients, etc... Try not to get bogged down in technical details or jargon.

I would also write about what seems to be significant efforts outside of work in the education sector. If you have not already developed a well-thought out career goal, make sure you do not overlook the time is takes to do that. And lastly, research the schools you are applying to so that you can speak with confidence about the schools (specific) resources and how they will help you achieve your goals. If you do those things, you should be competitive for a top 10 school.

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
