Profile Evaluation.URGENT!!!Please help.

by ayushjain1408 Wed May 15, 2013 9:30 am

Hi! I am currently pursuing 3rd and Final year of Bachelor of Commerce(B.COM) degree from Rohilkhand University of Bareilly(U.P.),a not-much prestigious State Govt. University of Uttar Pradesh State in India.I will graduate in 2014 and expect to score 65% overall.
My previous scores are:
Class 10th,CBSE - 93%
Class 12th,CBSE - 80%
Work Experience - Nil
Co-curriculars - Average
My question is that:
1)With this profile and nil work experience,do I realistically stand any chance of selection in Top50 global schools for MBA or Masters in Management courses? Given i have a 3-year degree and nil work experience.
2)Which colleges I can aim for?
3)And what are their application deadlines and requirements?
Please give an answer closer to the ground reality. Thanks.

Hi there,

Congrats on getting to the completion of your degree, and it's good to be looking ahead and planning for the future.

However it is true that most management and MBA programs are looking for work experience preferably. This is partly because much of the learning in the program comes from your classmates and all are expected to contribute to discussions and projects and so on from their past working experience.

While some do go straight to an Indian IIM from undergrad, to have a chance at top global MBA programs as well as strengthen your hiring prospects after grad school, it is recommended that you work 3-5 years and then apply. Then you will have a lot to draw from for your application as well as the program.

In terms of timing, it is common for application deadlines to begin in the fall (to start the program the following fall), and you will want to take the GMAT exam prior to that. Most people spend 2-3 months preparing for the GMAT exam as that is a large factor on your applications.

Good luck with your future career, and be sure to continue to do research into what your goals are and to follow these types of boards to continue to gather info!

Hi! Thanks for your advice.
Can you please tell about the Masters in Management or M.Sc in Management courses of UK(offered by LSE,etc.) and other countries.Heard that they are meant for undergrads with little or no work experience.
1)What kind of profile is required for them?
2)What is the value of these courses in job market?

Hi,

Yes LSE offers a variety of Masters degrees in Management, Finance, Economics, and other areas. There is less of a requirement for work experience prior to the degree, and they do expect strong undergraduate work and many ask for a GRE or GMAT score.

I would suggest doing some research into what career paths most interest you, as that can help dictate the type of degree you pursue. The MBA is very universally known for a certain level of general management expertise, and can be vital for specific roles in consulting firms or investment banks, but can also translate to any number of different management roles. However if interested in a job that is very specific to finance let's say or economics, or statistics, a Masters in that area can be useful. So it probably depends upon whether you'd like to go more broad or more specific in your studies and whether you have a feel for the types of post-graduate-study work you'd like to do.

On the LSE website you can click on different degrees, such as Masters in Finance, and see the info on employment for that group of graduates, for example: http://www2.lse.ac.uk/intranet/CareersA ... /Home.aspx.

Hope that helps, and good luck on your upcoming decisions!
