* Pronoun Reference doubt

by siddharthsyal31 Thu Jan 27, 2011 12:05 pm

Some parents have a very difficult time coming to grips with the fact that their offspring have become adults; consequently, they see their children as they were during their adolescence.

A. they see their children as they were during
B. they see their children as they had been during
C. they see their children as if during
D. their children appear to them as they did in
E. their children appear to them as though in

After looking into the options, I found a,c,d completely wrong as "they" present at the end in these sentences seemed to refer to "parents". Also I had read somewhere in manhattan forums that when there are pronouns such as "they" and "them" in the clause , the pronouns should point to the same antecedent

Applying the above principle, I found a,c,d wrong but to my surprise the correct answer was one among them only

Instructors please advice

hi --
i noticed that this is your first post.
welcome!
but please read the forum rules: read-before-you-post-general-verbal-folder-guidelines-t2718.html

you can't post problems in this folder without giving the ORIGINAL SOURCE of the problem -- i.e., the company or author that first produced the problem (not, for instance, a forum or other secondhand source on which it has previously been posted).
if you don't know the original source, then i'm sorry, but you can't post the problem here.

we will delete this thread within a week if the original source of the problem is not posted. thanks.

I am sorry for that.
I saw this problem at http://www.scribd.com/doc/7153330/Sente ... s-Practice
I am not aware of the author as there was no mention of the author on the site

Also, please advise as to what the posted correct answer is. There are so many problems on this site and I could not find this problem.

The correct answer is given as (A)
There is a search box given at the bottom. You can search "Some parents" in it which will take you directly to the question.

Thanks in advance

Hi Siddhath,

Your knowledge 'when there are pronouns such as "they" and "them" in the clause , the pronouns should point to the same antecedent ' is correct . The only thing you missed is that actually all 'they, their, they' are referring to same antecedent and that is 'parent' in this case .

"Parents see their children as the parents were during their adolescence"

Thanks ,
Pranab.

Thanks pranabiitkgp for the reply

But can you please elaborate a bit more how is the second "they" refering to parents.
I thought that it refers to the children as "the parents" have difficulty coming to the fact that "their" children have grown up and "they" think of "their" children as "their" children were in adoloscence

i.e. the parents are still of the opinion that their children are in adoloscence.

Please advice where am I going wrong

hi --

sorry, we can't accept unsourced problems.
scribd is like a forum -- it's a place where people post secondhand versions of things written elsewhere -- so that's not a primary source.

we need the actual, original source of this problem, or else we'll delete this thread within about one week -- this is a policy that we must follow in order to avoid running afoul of various copyright issues.

thanks!
