Pronoun Reference

by Haresh_Chimanpure Wed Dec 09, 2009 4:53 am

The Iroquois were primarily planters, although they supplemented their cultivation of maize, and beans with fishing and hunting.

Above is correct Answer of question 19 of OG12 Sentence Correction.

Can anyone help me to understand how THEY refers to Iroquois, why it does not refer to Planters.

Parallelism: The Iroquis were X, although they supplemented Y.

"The Iroquis" and "they" are subjects of their respective verbs "were" and "supplemented." The parallelism is signalled by "although."
