MY Queries

1. Is my profile good enough for top B-Schools?
2. I am thinking of joining a job along with my social venture. What kind of job shall I take which would be in sync with my profile for MBA? I am thinking of a sales & marketing, entry level consulting, Micro finance or an NGO? Will joining an NGO be best for my profile? Also how do you see a 3-month international NGO internship for me at this stage?
3. How can I further improve my profile? I would be applying in Round-1 this year.
4. Please let me know your thoughts on my target schools
5. Will retaking GMAT significantly improve my profile, if I am able to score a 750?

Would really appreciate if you can answer my queries. Thanks a lot!

Hello,

I will address your questions one by one. First, if you can improve your score to a 750, it will help you, of course. It won’t guarantee admission to a top business school, but it will help. If you are not able to improve your GMAT score significantly, your score of a 710 is a very good one for the schools you’re targeting.

I am a little bit confused about your questions regarding what job you should take next. Are you currently working? If you are not currently working and you plan to apply in October, then it might take some time for you to get a new job and will likely take a few months to have an impact on the organization with which you work. You may not have a lot to write about for your essays by October, depending on when you start. That written, your job choice should really be based on your professional interests. I wouldn’t advise you to take a job that you’re not particularly interested in because it might help you get into a business school. I would encourage you to think about your long term professional goals and pursue a job in the short term that will help you develop the skills and experiences to achieve your long term goals.

In terms of your target schools, I believe that HBS will be a reach. Depending on your leadership experience and accomplishments as a social entrepreneur, you may be in a better position to be competitive at the other schools you have listed. It’s unclear to me whether you are a volunteer or a full time employee at the organization. And based on your questions to me about your job choices, I’m a bit worried that you have not thought out your professional goals, which is something that most business schools ask about. I am also not sure how to evaluate a GPA of 72% out of 100. Is that average or above average for an Indian college? With a bit more information, I could provide some more guidance.

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
