Punctuation errors

Pg 92 Fundamentals of verbal
He needs a kidney transplantat ; without it, he dies.

What are the rules for using pronouns in independent clauses which are separated by semi colons. Here the "it" in the second half only makes sense cause the antecedent is kidney transplant. If you didnt have the first half the independent clause "without it, he dies" cant stand alone-therefore the use of the semi colon will be wrong here since semi colons can only join independent clauses..

I was able to find 2 OG questions that include both a semicolon and at least one answer choice that included a pronoun referring to an antecedent on the other side of the clause. The correct answer was never the answer choice that included the pronoun, HOWEVER, the OG does not mention the pronoun as an error in either instance.

Moral of the story: semi-colons require two independent clauses, but clauses that include pronouns are still clauses. As long as the pronoun clearly and unambiguously refers to one noun, no matter where that noun is, I'd let it slide.
