Query on Idioms Given in Foundations of Gmat Verbal

by rte.sushil Sat Nov 03, 2012 8:43 pm

Hello,

I was across through the idioms list in chapter 7 , idioms and found there are so many correct, suspect and wrong sentences given with each word. I tried many times to go through the list but everytime i lost track.
Sorry to say the idioms given in the format are not clearly understandable. There is a mix of so many similar sentences that it becomes highly difficult not only to memorize but to differentiate between right and wrong. There is so much overlap to grasp the imp. things from each word. at the end of reading the list , we found no value addition and feel not happy about it.
No clear point is mentioned that we have to keep in mind or learn out from each word.

Moreover , i am surprised what you mean by suspect,is it right or wrong or depends? what should we understand from it. if it is conditional then what are the conditions?

If everytime we have to understand the meaning of sentence, then what is that thing which i am keeping in mind? what concept i am learning from it:(?

In the end, some examples are difficult to understand to understand why it is wrong or correct?
e.g. Cheese is not so great as people say is suspect? ok agree ,,,,althought no condidition isgiven. If is suspect then who will confirm?
Cheese is SO great as people say. I wonder just by omitting NOT the sentence became wrong. so what is that with NOT? not clear. it wonders us to think the usage with NOT rather than focus on word which is given.

Please help me with following queries.
1.) How to understand these sentences or idioms list given here?
2.) Is there simplied list given somewhere so that i can memorize the imp./crucial points rather than learning/reading whole story.

Thanks a lot!!!

if you are not willing to go through the idioms list and memorize the ones that don't seem obvious to you, there is nothing we can do to help with that. you just have to commit to doing the work required. i would advise ignoring the suspect ones and just focus on memorizing the correct and incorrect forms listed in our book for each idiom..
