Question from GMAT Prep

The parachutelike membranes of Africa's scaly-tailed flying squirrels differ from those of the flying squirrels in the family Sciuridae because they are attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of the wrist

A) because they are attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of
B) because of being attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow rather than at
C) in their attachment to a carilage rod at the elbow instead of being attached at
D) in that they are attached to a cartilage tod at the elbow rather than at
E) in their being attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of

Answer is D.

My questions are:

1. Why should we use "Because" here?
2. I thought C, D, E because "they" and "their" doesnt have clear references. Why is it wrong?

I'll give this question a try:

A) because they are attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of
B) because of being attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow rather than at
C) in their attachment to a carilage rod at the elbow instead of being attached at
D) in that they are attached to a cartilage tod at the elbow rather than at
E) in their being attached to a cartilage rod at the elbow instead of

B) C) and E) sounds ackward. 'because of being' & in their.
A) - ackward because of the usage 'instead of the wrist'
D) OK - 'AT the elbow rather than AT' - parallel
