Question on usage of BETWEEN

by sivai87 Mon Jun 27, 2011 7:27 am

Hello All,

Can it be taken as a hint that if the comparison is between two objects which uses the word "BETWEEN" to compare the objects, it is mandatory to use the word "AND" between the compared objects?

Came across a question in OG: Sample Question 96 SC

One of the primary distinctions between our intelligence with that of the other primates......

The correct answer is the one with the option,

One of the primary distinctions between our intelligence AND that of the other primates.....

However in the answer explanation, it is not described as usage of "BETWEEN X AND Y" a mandatory option. So, let me know is the usage of BETWEEN with AND is the ONLY correct usage, or the below comparison format are also correct?

between X with that of Y
between X to that of Y

i think between X and Y is the correct idiom construction. others are unidiomatic. between must be used when we want to relate/compare 2 objects. it must be parallel and the two objects, X and Y, must be linked with <and>.

someone reply if you think otherwise.....

you are correct. "between" needs "and" unless you are referring to a specific pair of things at once (eg. "you have a brain between your ears")..

Dear Experts,

Please validate my understanding of the use of 'as' and 'but' in the options A and C in the OG12 Q96:

sorry cumulonimbus, but you can't post OG questions on this forum, per express request of GMAC. if you want to ask about a construction that's in one of those problems, you'll have to construct your own example(s) in order to avoid running afoul of that request.

(also, please read the forum rules, where all the things you are/aren't allowed to do are posted)
thanks.

So my understanding is -

1) not so much sth as sth - correct
2) not so much sth but sth - correct

but you can't mix them up such as not so much sth but as sth

Also, since GMAT prefers more of academic English option with idiom 1 will be more likely correct.

What do experts think?

ninaP494, i'm pretty sure you've posted this response on the wrong thread -- it has nothing to do with any of the discussion here. please post it on the correct thread. (:

also, since this thread is about an OG problem, i'm going to lock it.
