Rates & Work - "CHASE" problem. Error in book?

by quarks22 Thu Dec 03, 2009 6:37 pm

Hello,
I have a question regarding #5 on page 45 of the 4th edition of the Word Translations book.

I believe this is a "CHASE" problem.

The answer says it takes 3 hours James to CATCH UP TO Adrienne. However, shouldnt it be 4 hours since you need to ADD the HEAD START TIME?

#15 in the same chapter is also a "CHASE" problem, and it does indeed add the head start time in order to figure out how long it Cristina to catch up to Nicky.

So why does one problem add the head start time, but the other doesnt? I dont really see the difference between the problems so Iwould assume the strategy must be the same if the problems are the same. They are both chase problems.

If I am correct, then the answer to number 5 on page 45 should be 16 miles, since the correct time to catch Adrienne is 3 hours + 1 hour head start= 4 hours. This gives a distance of RT = 4 hours * 4 m/hr = 16 miles, NOT 12 miles.

I apologize in advance if my math is incorrect. Just a little confused.

PS Is there an addendum available for any mistakes that might exist in the strategy guides? Thanks.

Please post if you have additional questions. At this time, we do not release lists of errata to our Strategy Guides, because we are constantly collecting feedback, update, and suggestions. If you find an error, please send it our way, so we can revise it for the next printing of the books.
