Ratios

by VeronicaG979 Fri Mar 11, 2016 11:37 am

Hi! I have a quick question, in this problem

At the beginning of the year, the ratio of juniors to seniors in high school X was 3 to 4. During the year, 10 juniors and twice as many seniors transferred to another high school, while no new students joined high school X. If, at the end of the year, the ratio of juniors to seniors was 4 to 5, how many seniors were there in high school X at the beginning of the year?

Why is the number of seniors that transferred to another hight school 20? if it says “twice as many seniors”?

The prompt reads "During the year, 10 juniors and twice as many seniors transferred"... you can rephrase this as twice as many seniors as juniors transferred. Therefore, if 10 juniors transferred, then you know twice as many seniors as juniors transferred leaving you with 20. Hope that helps.

first, i doubt this problem is from the GMAT PREP software -- the terminology is far too US-centric for that ("juniors", "seniors", "high school", etc. -- these are words that most countries do not use).
so, this problem is in the wrong folder.

second, as per the forum rules, we need the ENTIRETY of the problem as originally provided, INCLUDING ALL ANSWER CHOICES (and officially correct answer).

please do familiarize yourself with the forum rules before posting. thank you.
