Re-Post: Better Than - Idiom Example

by salesh.aswani Sun Aug 04, 2013 12:32 pm

Hi Ron,

Re-posting the question here as earlier it was posted in the wrong section. I would like to have a detailed explanation.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Question:
As part of my notes on SC i wrote an example for the idiom "Better...than..." a while back as below,

e.g. INSEAD has a better MBA Program than Emory Goizueta.

But while reviewing this example I think the same is not correct and the correct example for the Idiom "Better....than...." will be,

e.g.1. INSEAD has a better MBA Program than MBA Program at Emory Goizueta.

or

e.g.2. INSEAD has a better MBA Program than Emory Goizueta's.

Please let me know if my understanding above is correct.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Ron,

Your earlier brief response was as follows,

---------------------------------------------------------------
wrong folder for this problem. i'll give a brief answer, but you'll have to post in the correct folder (= general verbal questions) if you want more details.
* the original version is correct.
* revision #1 is wrong because "at..." is not parallel to anything.
* revision #2 is not really ok, but not for any reason that will be tested on the gmat.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Based on response i just wanted to know is this concept based on "Ellipses".

Salesh.

i actually don't have any idea what that means. (i know very, very few grammar terms.) so i can't help you out there.

on the other hand, when you have these comparisons, if you just make sure that the things are (1) things that can actually be logically compared and (2) parallel to each other, then you should be all good.

Thanks Ron Appreciate your response.

I got it...INSEAD is being compared with Emory Goizueta.

My confusion is that what is "MBA Program" being compared with.

well... it's not being compared with anything. you're talking about mba programs in both sentences.

e.g.,
Sarah makes better pizza than Tony.
--> here, the comparison is between Sarah and Tony (specifically in terms of how well each makes pizza).
there's not a comparison between pizza and anything else, because pizza is the only food at issue here.

Perfect, Got It....Thanks a Lot...

BTW...Gave my 4th GMAT (Q: 43, V: 27) and Bombed it...in fact scored lower than my 3rd Attempt, which was 600 (Q: 43, V: 30).

I know based on your posting rules this is not the place...but just feeling extremely low after putting all the effort since Jan 2011 I am not going any where with this test.

Any ways thank you for clarifying my query....

Salesh.

... whoa, that's more than 2.5 years.

hopefully you've taken some good long breaks (ideally several of them) in the middle of that interval.
if not, close the books and walk away from everything having to do with this test for at least a month, preferably a little bit longer. when you get back, you're most likely score higher than when you left.

Hi Ron,

Yes I have taken breaks after each test. Some have been circumstantial and some by choice.

Hence the period of 3 years. But this time I am on a roll and mostly want to figure out my strategy.

In the last test I think it was the lack of sleep the previous day before the test that would have led to mental fatigue. I did not want to accept that, but after reading an article (http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... you-crazy/) by Stacey I think I was fatigued and went through the test quickly to get over with it and see the score.

The last three practice test scores on GMAT Prep were 630 (Q: 47, V: 30), 670 (Q: 44, V: 38) and 660 (Q: 46 V: 35). Based on this I think I am ready to at least hit my target score of 650+. I am now debating when to give the test in September or October and what my studying strategy should be. If you have any strategies to suggest it will be greatly appreciated.

hey salesh,
this is the kind of thing you should post in the General GMAT Strategy Questions folder. (On the forum homepage, this is the folder that appears first.) This isn't the place for questions that relate to study plans.

Thanks.
