"read about" vs. "read of"

What's the difference between them?
1. X read of Y.
2. X read about Y.
Do the sentences above convey the same meaning?
I found such contrast in an old OG question.

These two appear equivalent to me. Was this distinction the basis for an elimination of choices? I suspect (hope!) there were other errors at play.
