recent national study of public schools

by poonamchiK Thu Mar 31, 2011 11:29 am

A recent national study of public schools shows that there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were four years ago.

(A) there are now one microcomputer for everythirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were

(B) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were

(C) there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times the numbers

(D) there are one microcomputer for every thirtytwo pupils, four times as many as there was

(E) there is one microcomputer for every thirtytwo pupils, four times as many compared to

OA : B.
My query the correct ans is fine. But wht i want to ask is tht 'thre is 1 MC for every 32 pupils, 4x AS MANY AS there were'?

Why 'were' in the end and not was?

Because they are comparing the number of micro computers.

Rephrasing the given sentence in numerical terms -

If there are 640 (32 x20) pupils in the public school, there would be 20 MC, which they are comparing to 5 MC four years ago.

As '5 micro computers' is plural, it is using 'were' and not 'was'

that's the problem. we can't give you any help on this question, because the question itself is flawed in a way that you won't see on the GMAT..

Hi methevoid,

Are you sure that this is the exact version of the sentence in the OG? I have seen it on various forums and it is different from what has been posted here

Regards

If this actually is an OG question, we can't do anything with it because questions for the OG are not allowed on this forum. Please read the folder guidelines: read-before-you-post-general-verbal-folder-guidelines-t2718.html
