Refute Vs Contradict

by das.sourabh85 Tue Dec 11, 2012 12:03 am

I came across a passage in OG 12 (verbal sample ques, 2 Passage) where the answer options are confusing. Question states
The main purpose of the passage is to
(A) propose an experiment
(B) analyze a function
(C) refute an argument
(D) explain a contradiction
(E) simulate a process

I am confused between option C and D. Not sure what exactly is the difference between refute and contadict. Please help.

Regards,
Sourabh

C--> weaken the argument i.e. point out a evidence that will weaken the conclusion.
D--> explain the gap in the reasoning i.e. if A is happening, then B should happen. but C happens. So you need to explain why C happened.

Good explanation singh.

I'll also point out that the split isn't between refute vs contradict. It's between refute (author has an opinion) vs explain (author is giving facts).
