request for profile evaluation

by smriti3070 Tue Dec 29, 2009 10:15 am

Hi. I am a 26 years old Indian Male. I would request you to evaluate my profile.

I have given Gmat thrice. My scores have been 650, 620 and finally 670.

My work ex is as follows:

1. total 3.5 years (would be 4 years at the time of joining).
2. Initial 2 years in the IT industry. Have worked in non-traditional roles at two MNCs.
3. 1.5 years of entrepreneurial work ex. I have co-founded a digital media agency.
Have handled 6-7 projects.
4. I have co-founded 3 online web ventures. Though they have been launched in December, I would be able to leverage them in my essays.
5. I also run a local print magazine along with a partner. Lead a time of 5.
6. I have social/volunteering experience with a local NgO. I have been working with the NGO for the last 4 years. I hold a leadership position.
7. I have had good extra-curricular experience during my under-grad.
8. I have also started a graphology society in my hometown.

Undergrad GPA-3.1

Hobbies: photography, graphology.

I am confident that I would be able to write good essays.

I want to know my chances in the following:

U.S.:
1. USC Marshall
2. U.C. Irvine
3. Emory
4. Georgia Tech Univ
5. CMU Tepper
6. Univ of Virginia- Darden
7. Duke
8. Georgetown

EUROPE:
1. Manchester
2. Cass
3. Imperial
4. Erasmus
5. IE
6. IESE
7. ESADE
8. GENT

I am also looking at:
1. NUS
2. Nanyang
3. Univ of Toronto

Please help.

Thanks for your time
Regards
Saurabh

Hi Jessica,

I should have specified this earlier. Sorry for the confusion, but the earlier request happens to be about my partner's profile. Apart from the last 1.5 years of work ex and of course our first names, there isnt anything similar about us.

I was encouraged to post a query here based on his feedback. Also, I was a little flustered about my Gmat scores.

I would appreciate your help a lot. Thanks.

Ok, thanks for the clarification! There were enough similarities that it looked very familiar, but just enough differences that I wasn't sure.

It looks like you have several strengths, particularly entrepreneurial experience with some results, and some leadership skills. Be sure you get references from either past supervisors or a client. The weaknesses are GMAT - a 670 itself isn't that bad a score, but combined with a slightly low GPA (recognizing that Indian schools grade differently) and being in a popular demographic (Indian technologists), the score will stand out a bit. But don't be flustered by the score - it's certainly not terrible.

From the American schools on your list, I think Darden, Duke and Tepper, and will be stretches (Georgetown and USC too, but to a lesser degree) but you should be competitive at the others. I'm not as familiar with the European schools, but most of them seem reasonable; IESE and ESADE might be stretches. The key is to go through the schools' websites and look for average GMATs. It's not that GMAT is the single most important characteristic, but that by selecting schools where your GMAT is competitive, you remove one "weakness."

I hope that helps.

Good luck,
