require: infinitive or command subjunctive??

by harpreet1205 Thu Sep 19, 2013 4:22 pm

According to a recent study, hand sanitizers require a 60 percent minimum alcohol
concentration for the killing of most harmful bacteria and viruses.

- require a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration for the killing of
- require that there be a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration to kill
- require that a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration be present to kill
- require a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration to kill
- require that there be a 60 percent minimum alcohol concentration for the killing of

Answer is D. I too chose D but according to Manhattan guide there are certain verbs that take either command subjunctive or the infinitive and require is one of those verbs.

How can I decide which one is correct from grammar perspective.

Hi Harpreet,

Mentioned problem is from some other material.. so instead of putting that, put a reproduced one or mention source.

In the particular statement... require can not take "that". Sentence will be- sanitizers ...require that.... which is not correct. Here, require is used as verb rather than command subj.
saitizers require this to kill that.

You are required to complete the test. - command subj
It is required that the book is read before the test. - command subj
I require money to buy a book. - used as verb

Experts pls correct if there is anything wrong in this explanation-

please read the forum rules: read-before-you-post-general-verbal-folder-guidelines-t2718.html

you can't post problems in this folder without giving the ORIGINAL SOURCE of the problem -- i.e., the company or author that first produced the problem (not, for instance, a forum or other secondhand source on which it has previously been posted).
if you don't know the original source, then, sorry, but you can't post the problem here.
this applies to MGMAT problems as well -- there are over three thousand problems in our database, so we won't recognize all of them from memory.

we will delete this thread within a week if the original source of the problem is not posted. thanks.
