Rule for Conclusion

by Genevieve Mon Oct 08, 2007 9:41 pm

Hi There,

I have found that in RC assumption questions, the "negation" test is really handy as a final step to ensure the correct answer choice. Is there a similar rule for draw a conclusion question?

Just wondering...

Thanks so much for all of your help!!

You could try something along similar lines - 'If I assume that this conclusion is NOT true, then will it cause some sort of contradiction or absurdity in the argument's premises?'

It may not be as easy to apply this logic to conclusion questions as to assumption questions, but you could certainly give it a shot. The underlying logic - 'contrapositive' or 'modus tollens', if you want to look in an actual logic book - is the same.
