by aggarwal.mail Wed May 12, 2010 3:07 am

Although she had signed a pledge of abstinence while being an adolescent, Frances Willard was 35 years old before she chose to become a temperance activist.

(A) while being an adolescent
(B) while in adolescence
(C) at the time of her being adolescent
(D) as being in adolescence
(E) as an adolescent

A and E correctly compare Frances Willard to "An adolescent". I think it will be incorrect to compare to "adolescence".

I wonder if inserting the corrected sentence "as an adolescent" makes the sentence ambigous, and this makes choice B better.

I feel that the sentence "[Frances Willard] had signed a pledge of abstinence as an adolescent" gives the impression that she signed the pledge in the way teenagers do.

Can someone please explain?

Nope. If the sentence said "like an adolescent", it would have that meaning.

As a/an _____ means "while someone or something is actually a/an _____".

This dog will need to consume up to 2,000 Calories per day as an adult, but does not need nearly as many Calories as a puppy.

to the original poster:

please read the forum rules. read-before-you-post-general-verbal-folder-guidelines-t2718.html

you can't post problems in this folder without giving the ORIGINAL SOURCE of the problem -- i.e., the company or author that first produced the problem (not, for instance, a forum or other secondhand source on which it has previously been posted).
if you don't know the original source, then, sorry, but you can't post the problem here.
this applies to MGMAT problems as well -- there are over three thousand problems in our database, so we won't recognize all of them from memory.

we will lock or delete this thread within a week if the original source of the problem is not posted. thanks.
