by lw Mon Aug 25, 2008 2:49 pm

The Environmental Protection Agency frequently puts mandatory controls on toxic substances that present as little risk as one in a million chances to cause cancer.

a)
b) as little risk as one chance in a million chances of causing
c) as little risk as one chance in a million chances that will cause
d) a risk as little as one chance in a million for causing

Does anybody know the rule when a word must be within "as__word___as"? Many tks

it appears that you're missing an answer choice. moreover, as all of these choices have noticeable faults, it appears that you may well be missing the correct answer choice.

"chance ... of VERBing" is the correct idiom for discussing probability. ("chance to VERB" is a correct idiom too, but not in this case; that idiom is used when discussing opportunities, as in "i had the chance to do it"). that leaves (b), but (b), as written, is clearly wrong because of the repetition of "chance"/"chances".

what's the last answer choice, and/or have you transcribed any of the existing answer choices incorrectly?

Ron, you are correct. The poster wrongly wrote choice B.

Here is how it(B) should be :

(B) as little risk as one chance in a million of causing

and the answer is B.
