categorizing the problems will actually save you time if you're doing it right. once you know what issue you're dealing with, you can focus just on that rather than looking at the entire sentence. but you'll never be ready to do this on the GMAT unless you make a serious effort to categorize the problems in practice. make sure you NEVER eliminate a problem in practice unless you can put your finger on an actual grammar rule in the book that allows you to eliminate the choice..
