49. In its most recent approach, the comet Crommelin passed the Earth at about the same distance and in about the same position, some 25 degrees above the horizon, that Halley's comet will pass the next time it appears.
(A) that Halley's comet will pass
(C) as Halley's comet
(D) as will Halley's comet
(E) as Halley's comet will do

1. which one is right btw A and D ?
There are two kind of answer that instructors have replied - A and D. Idiomatically, A has no error. right? I think it is the issue related with interpretation and also believe that the intention of the question is that the comet Crommelin passed the exactly the same postion that will HC will pass. your opinion?

2. What is the exact meaning of C and how is its acceptability?
If there is no additional phrase, "the next time it appears", at the end of the sentence, is C allowed to use? If so, does it imply "as as Halley's come (passed)?

Thank you.
